The RoHS Certification Challenge

Regulatory authorities are now stepped-up with new ways to reduce the environmental impact and potential hazard of wastes from electrical and electronic equipment. The European Union directive 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) holds electrical and electronic equipment companies directly responsible for the chemical compliance of their products. This means all electrical and electronic equipments (EEE) have to conform to strict standards, extensive compliance documentation and ensure that EEEs sold in the EU don’t contain more than 0.1/0.01% of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr+6), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).

There are two main areas of RoHS compliance risk:-

◉ Product material risk: During selection of materials and components for the product and use of indirect materials in the process of manufacturing.

◉ Supplier risk: From product variation, engineering or manufacturing changes, multiple suppliers and contamination through the supply chain.

Manufacturers will need to ensure that their electrical & electronic products, parts and components comply in order to be distributed and sold in all over the world. If companies work with a good framework and valid strategies, they could reduce the total costs to meet EU compliance.
